Chimneys take more weather than any other part of the house and get looked at least often. We repoint them, rebuild them, re-lead them, cap them, and where the flue is dead we take them down below the tiles and cover over.
Harrogate is full of tall stacks. The Victorian and Edwardian villas around the Stray and up through the Duchy carry chimneys three or four flues wide, standing proud of the slate and catching everything that comes across from the Pennines. The mortar erodes first, then the flaunching around the pots, then the lead at the roof line — and the first sign indoors is a damp shadow on the chimney breast in a bedroom.
We handle the full range: raking out and repointing in the right mix, with lime on older stone and soft brick so the stack can still breathe; rebuilding the top courses or the whole stack where the faces have blown; new step flashings, soakers and back gutters; pots, cowls, caps and vented capping; and clean removals for stacks that are now only a maintenance bill. Everything is done off a scaffold or tower — a chimney is the wrong place for a ladder.
Perished mortar raked back to sound depth and repointed, in lime where the stack and its bedding call for it.
Spalled, cracked or leaning stacks taken down to solid work and rebuilt in matched brick or stone.
New apron, step and back-gutter lead dressed and wedged into the joints. The detail that leaks more than any other.
Cracked pots replaced, cowls fitted against rain and jackdaws, dead flues capped and vented, flaunching renewed.
Stack taken down below the roofline, structure made good and the slope covered over so the repair is invisible.
Terraced and semi-detached stacks handled with both households informed and costs split as agreed.
