The roof edge and everything hanging off it

Fascias & Soffits Harrogate & Leeds

Soft fascias drop the gutters, open the eaves to birds and make the whole frontage look neglected. We take the old boards off, check what is behind them, and re-hang the gutters true on new brackets.

Fascias & Soffits in Harrogate and Leeds

The fascia is the board along the roof edge that the guttering screws into. The soffit closes the eaves underneath it, and the bargeboards run up the gable. On anything built before the 1990s they are timber, they have been painted over more times than anyone can remember, and a screwdriver goes into them without much effort. Once they go, the gutter sags, water gets in behind the roof edge, and the loft gains tenants.

We renew fascias, soffits and bargeboards across Harrogate, Knaresborough and Leeds in UPVC, or in new treated timber where a painted profile is what the building wants — which is often the case on the older villas and on stone cottages up the dale. We do not cap over rot. The old board comes off, the rafter feet are inspected, eaves ventilation is fitted or retained, and everything goes back with the right falls.

What is included

Full replacement

Old boards stripped off, rafter feet inspected and photographed, new fascia and soffit fitted. No capping over soft timber.

UPVC boards

Solid fascia and soffit in white, black, anthracite or woodgrain finishes. No repainting, wipe clean.

Timber for period frontages

Treated and primed timber where plastic would look wrong on a Victorian villa or a gritstone cottage.

Bargeboards and gables

Gable boards, dry verge and matching cladding done at the same visit so the whole edge lines up.

Eaves ventilation

Vented soffit or over-fascia vents, plus comb filler at the tile line, so closing the eaves does not trap moisture.

Gutters re-hung

New brackets and a measured fall on the new board, so the gutter works as well as it looks.

Signs the roof edge is finished

  • Paint lifting in sheets and timber that gives when you press it
  • Gutter pulling away from the board or dipping between brackets
  • Birds or wasps getting into the loft at the eaves each spring
  • Staining and drips appearing behind the gutter rather than out of it
  • Soffit boards bowing downwards or hanging open at the joints
  • Repainting the same boards every couple of summers to keep them respectable

How the job runs

1. Check the boards and the rafter feet

We look at what is behind the fascia, not just the face of it, and photograph anything rotten.

2. Choose the finish

UPVC colour and profile, or timber, held up against your own brick or stone before you decide.

3. Written quote

Boards, ventilation, gutters and any rafter repairs listed line by line.

4. Fit and test

Typically one to three days for a whole house. Gutters re-hung, flushed through, guaranteed for ten years.

Why Harrogate Roofing for fascias & soffits

  • Rotten timber is removed, never capped over and hidden
  • Eaves ventilation fitted as standard so a sealed roof edge does not create condensation
  • Timber option offered wherever UPVC would spoil a period frontage
  • Rafter feet repaired where we find decay, and photographed so you see what you paid for
  • Gutters re-hung on new brackets to a measured fall instead of being screwed back where they were

Fascias & Soffits: common questions

  • The fascia is the upright board at the roof edge carrying the gutter. The soffit is the horizontal board beneath it closing the eaves. They usually need doing together, along with the bargeboards.
  • No. Capping traps damp against timber that is already failing and hides it for a few more years. We strip the old boards, inspect the rafters and fit new.
  • Yes, and they go back on new brackets once the fascia is fitted. If the gutter itself is past it we will price replacing it at the same time rather than re-hanging tired plastic.
  • Not when they are vented. We fit vented soffit or over-fascia vents so air keeps moving. Sealing an eaves without ventilation leads to condensation and rot.
  • A semi is usually one to two days, a detached house two to three. Access is by tower or scaffold and is included in the quoted price.
  • Yes. Boards come in white, black, anthracite grey, rosewood and oak woodgrain among others, and we bring samples out to hold against the house.
